3 Creative Ways to Encourage Professional Learning

Professional learning doesn’t have to be confined to traditional workshops or training sessions. With a bit of creativity, you can learn, and also inspire staff to engage in continuous learning in fun, accessible, and even unconventional ways. Here are three innovative approaches to professional development that you can easily implement.
1. Professional Podcasts: Learning Anytime, Anywhere
Podcasts are a fantastic way for busy educators to engage in professional learning on their own time. For those interested in AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), professional podcasts like “Talking with Tech” and “SLP Nerdcast” offer a wealth of knowledge, including interviews with experts, practical tips, and discussions on current trends. These podcasts can be accessed during commutes, workout sessions, or any other time when multitasking is possible.
Encourage staff to explore these podcasts by sharing a curated list of episodes relevant to their roles or interests. You could even start a “Podcast Club” where staff can listen to an episode on their own time and come together to discuss key takeaways and how they can apply the concepts in their classrooms.
2. Social Media Learning: Connect, Share, and Grow
Social media isn’t just for personal use—it’s also a powerful tool for professional learning. Platforms like Instagram are full of educators and experts sharing insights, resources, and inspiration. Accounts like ours, @AACchicks, and others like @omazingkidsaac, and @buildingwingsco provide valuable content around AAC, literacy and other special educational strategies, offering quick, digestible tips that educators can immediately put into practice.
Create a social media learning initiative by encouraging your team to follow these accounts and others that align with your school’s goals. Consider setting up a shared digital space, like a group chat or a collaborative board, where staff can share posts that resonate with them and discuss how they might implement new ideas in their teaching.
3. Potty PD: Learning on the Go!
One of the most unique, and pretty funny, ways to share professional learning is through “Potty PD.” This concept involves placing engaging, bite-sized professional development content in staff bathrooms. At Calhoun Elementary School, for example, a Potty PD flyer is posted in the staff restroom, featuring Chrome Tips, Tech to Try, Google Tips, and a QR code linking to a digital version of the flyer for easy access on mobile devices. This is a humorous approach that also works!
To implement this silly strategy in your school, create visually appealing posters with relevant tips, tricks, or quick insights that align with your staff's needs. Make sure to update the content regularly to keep it fresh and interesting. Don’t forget to include a QR code that links to more resources or a feedback form where staff can suggest future topics!
By incorporating these creative approaches into your professional development strategy, you can foster a culture of continuous learning that is engaging, accessible, and tailored to the needs of your staff. Whether through a quick glance at a Potty PD flyer, tuning into a podcast during a busy day, or scrolling through inspirational posts on Instagram, professional learning can become an integrated and enjoyable part of every educator’s routine.
