Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) play a pivotal role in enhancing communication for their students and securing the right Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device can be a critical step in this process. In this blog, we'll give you 3 main avenues through which SLPs can gain free access to devices for trials, ensuring informed decisions and tailored solutions.

Short-Term Loan Programs:

  a. PRC Saltillo: Offers a 90-day trial with the option to extend if a funding packet is in progress within the trial period. Plan ahead due to potential waiting lists.

  b. Ablenet: Utilize their online portal to request a 4-week loaner device. Extensions are available in 2-week increments. Ablenet goes the extra mile by loaning access equipment like switches and keyguards.

  c. Lincare AAC: Lincare extends a generous loan program, shipping a device for evaluation. If funding is pursued through Lincare, the student can keep the device until theirs is funded.

Local Representatives:

  a. PRC Saltillo and Tobii Dynavox: Have representatives in various areas. In some regions, multiple representatives are available, ensuring accessibility for evaluations.

  b. Control Bionics and Forbes Rehab Services: While these companies may have fewer representatives, they are willing to come out to evaluations, providing opportunities to try out their equipment firsthand.

Free AAC Applications:

  a. TD Snap: Available for free to SLPs and educators working with individuals using AAC.

  b. TouchChat and LAMP: These applications offer free access with a straightforward process on their respective websites.

  c. Other App Developers: Many app developers are willing to grant access if they know you are in the evaluation phase.

By making use of short-term loan programs, local representatives, and free AAC applications, SLPs can navigate the landscape of device trials effectively. Whether planning ahead for loaner devices, coordinating with representatives, or exploring digital solutions, we hope these tips help you put communication tools in the hands of more of your students!
