This video also includes a practical case study and highlights the benefits and challenges of using the SETT Framework.

The SETT Framework, developed by Joy Zabala, is a powerful tool for selecting and implementing Assistive Technology (AT), particularly in the field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). The framework guides teams through a structured approach to identifying the best communication supports for students by considering four critical areas:

  1. Student – Understanding the student’s unique communication needs, strengths, and challenges. This includes their current communication abilities, motor skills, cognitive level, and sensory needs.
  2. Environment – Analyzing the various environments where the student communicates (classroom, home, community). This includes identifying the communication demands in each setting and the supports or barriers present.
  3. Tasks – Defining the communication tasks the student needs to accomplish. These may include requesting, commenting, social interaction, or answering questions. The focus is on identifying tasks that support meaningful participation and learning.
  4. Tools – Determining which AAC tools (devices, systems, strategies) will best support the student in their communication tasks across environments. Tools are selected only after considering the student, environment, and tasks, ensuring a personalized approach.

The SETT Framework emphasizes collaboration among team members, including educators, therapists, and families, to ensure AAC solutions are customized, practical, and effective in enhancing the student’s communication.
